We are proud to finally bring to you all the 3rd component of our Mutual Aid Initiative launched in September, the Saleh al-Jafaraawi Matching Project, named for the slain martyr and hero journalist. Everywhere we go, we repeat the mantra: mutual aid is not liberation, and yet it is needed more than ever. While we continue to support political mobilisation which is what is needed to accelerate the end of the Zionist Entity, we must not forget the clear and consistent ask from our friends and comrades in Palestine for fundraising support, which is even more dire after the supposed ‘ceasefire’ in which the genocidal Zionist army continues to slaughter human beings all across Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond.

We need all of you in the global punk/music scene to help us make this project a success. We have so far matched 3 bands in our network with 3 families under the Matching Project, and so far it appears to be progressing well. Therefore, we want to invite more of you to join us as we have almost 100 requests for suppor that we cannot fulfill at a reasonable pace even with the Bi-Weekly Highlights that we do every month!

With small but consistent fundraising, we can guarantee a kind of temporary ‘UBI’ for the families we support, reducing some of the pressure they feel to constantly beg for donations.

Punks Against Apartheid Saleh Al-Jaafarawi Matching Project A flow chart depicting several multi-coloured 'steps'. 1 - Request for Support Palestinian families approach us on our website form or Instagram asking for support from the M.A.I. 2 - Processing Families are placed in a queue based on date of entry & urgency, with priority for stagnant campaigns. 3 - Registration Support PAA assists families to register on major fundraising platforms to help with verification and reach. 4 - Bi-Weekly Highlights Every two weeks, PAA identifies a campaign in the queue for concentrated global fundraising. 5 - Band Registration Bands/collectives approach PAA to sign up for long-term fundraising support for Palestinian families. 6 - Matching PAA connects registered bands/collectives with families on Instagram in order to fundraise for them over a minimum of 3 months. 7 - M.A.I. Evalution Bands/collectives submit regular receipts for transparency. The MAI will be evaluated with feedback from bands and families in Spring 2026. Since the launch of our Mutual Aid Initiative in September, we have managed to raise over €7,000 for Palestinian families with Bi-Weekly Highlights and a small pilot programme with 3 bands that we have matched with 3 families. We are happy with the results so far, but we still have almost 100 requests for aid which we would like to honour, and for that we need your help.
So we are expanding the ‘Matching Project’ component of the MAI, which we’ve named in after assassinated journalist Saleh al-Jaafarawi, who requested in his will to have sadaqah/zakat (charitable initiatives) done in his name. We will also be donating a percentage of the project’s monthly proceeds to organisations which support and protect Palestinian journalists in his honour.
Matching with a family under the Saleh Al-Jaafarawi Matching Project means that bands/artists commit to a minimum of 3 months of fundraising, with one show/fundraising drive each month for their match. The goal is to create consistent donation streams so that families don’t have to beg for support, and to harness the regularity of small D.I.Y. shows for bigger fundraising goals.
We have lots of thoughts and advice around managing your relationship with your match and setting appropriate expectations. For that, see our guide! (Link at the end) Remember: you won’t be doing this alone. This is a collective project! And as Mariame Kaba says, “Everything worthwhile is done with other people.” Punks Against Apartheid will help mediatet matches so you can focus on fundraising.
We are not asking you to over-promise miracle donations. As we have already shown with our own efforts, consistent small-scale fundraising can make waves. We are asking you to consider joining us as we expand this pilot program, and to help (with your feedback and that of the families we support) to construct a re-usable blueprint for large-scale grassroots direct mutual aid in our global scene.
